EVENT DETAILS
Fr. John Sheehan,
SJ is a Jesuit priest, based in Manhattan
. He is Chairman of the Xavier Society for the Blind, and chaplain for the
Notre Dame Club of NY, and for American Legion Post 2001, the 9-11 Memorial
Post that meets on the USS Intrepid. He helps out at St. Malachy’s, the Actors’
Chapel, and is a member of Actors Equity. He serves on the Board of the
National Association of Blind Veterans, and is a member of the Catholic War
Veterans.
Before coming to
the priesthood, he worked for a number of years in professional theatre and broadcasting,
and continues to perform and has four CD’s available. He has presented concerts
in Orlando, San Antonio, Austin, the University of Notre Dame, Scandinavia
House, at the Musician’s Union in New York and in several countries in Africa
and throughout Europe and. He received one of the first 3 degrees in theatre
ever awarded by the University of Notre Dame. He sings in New York with Jazz at Noon, the Blue Hill
Troupe, and the Amore Opera Company.
Among the solo
shows he presents are From Broadway to
God,( tracing how a singing actor ended up as priest who worked for 12
years in Nigeria and three in the South Pacific) and Sacred Songs and Silly Stuff (exploring the relationship between
faith and foolishness). All his solo shows involve story-telling and singing,
and all are family friendly. Most of the
music is from Broadway musicals, and the tone is light and funny, since,
according to Fr. John, “Preaching should be done in church, if at all.” Father
John does not believe that God will let him die before he gets to do a Broadway
show.
